Structured wiring has become a popular term in today's communications wiring market, and it is being loosely applied to many different building wiring configurations. In its most basic sense, the term can be used to describe any wiring system designed and installed according to a fixed set of rules. An "open wiring system", on the other hand, is a structured wiring system designed to be both application and vendor independent.
The concept of an open wiring system has been standardized by the EIA/ TIA-568 Commercial Building Telecommunications Wiring Standard. EIA/ TIA-568 provides basic guidelines for the specification of an open wiring system, standardizing on cable types, user connection interfaces and a star wired topology.
